History of Burberry

Early years

Burberry was founded in 1856 when 21-year-old Thomas Burberry (1835 - 1926), a former draper's apprentice, opened his own store in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England.^[1] By 1870 the business had established itself by focusing on the development of outdoors attire.^[1] In 1880 Burberry invented gabardine, a hardwearing, water-resistant yet breathable fabric, in which the yarn is waterproofed before weaving.^[1] The Gabardine was patented in 1888. Burberry was the original name, but then soon switched to Burberrys, after many customers from around the world began calling it Burberrys of London. This name is still visible on many older Burberry products.

1908 Burberry's advertisement^[2]

In 1891 Burberry opened a shop in the Haymarket, London, which still exists and is the site of Burberry’s corporate headquarters.^[1] In 1901, the Burberry Equestrian Knight Logo was developed containing the Latin word "Prorsum", meaning forwards, and registered as a trademark.^[1] In 1911 they became the outfitters for Roald Amundsen,^[1] the first man to reach the South Pole, and Ernest Shackleton, who led a 1914 expedition to cross Antarctica.

In 1914 Burberry was commissioned by the War Office to adapt its officer's coat to suit the conditions of contemporary warfare, resulting in the "trench coat".^[1] After the war, the trench coat became popular with civilians. The iconic Burberry check was created in the 1920s and used as a lining in its trench coats.^[1]

Burberry also specially designed aviation garments. A. E. Clouston and Mrs. Betsy Kirby Green made the fastest flying time to Cape Town from London in 1937 and were sponsored by Burberry.

Recent history

Burberry was an independent company until 1955, when it was bought by Great Universal Stores (GUS). Burberry Group plc was initially floated on the London Stock Exchange in July 2002.^[3] GUS spun off its remaining interest in Burberry in December 2005.^[4]

In 2006 Rose Marie Bravo, who as Chief Executive had led Burberry to mass market success, retired.^[5]

The black, white, and red pattern known as haymarket check or the "Burberry classic check" was first used as a lining for the Burberry trenchcoat in 1924. It was not until 1967 that the Burberry Check, now a registered trademark, was widely used on its own for items including umbrellas, scarves, and luggage. The Novacheck was introduced for the younger market, later altered by making it more "exploded" (bigger) and slanted in a diamond or "mitre" pattern. Christopher Bailey debuted of the "Housecheck", a more exploded version of the Novacheck, during the runway show of S/S 06.

Insomnia is a symptom^[1] of a sleeping disorder characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep despite the opportunity. It is typically followed by functional impairment while awake. Insomniacs have been known to complain about being unable to close their eyes or "rest their mind" for more than a few minutes at a time. Both organic and non-organic insomnia constitute a sleep disorder

Types of insomnia

Although there are several different degrees of insomnia, three types of insomnia have been clearly identified: transient, acute, and chronic.

Transient insomnia lasts from days to weeks. It can be caused by another disorder, by changes in the sleep environment, by the timing of sleep, severe depression, or by stress. Its consequences - sleepiness and impaired psychomotor performance - are similar to those of sleep deprivation.^[6]
Acute insomnia is the inability to consistently sleep well for a period of between three weeks to six months.^[7]
Chronic insomnia lasts for years at a time. It can be caused by another disorder, or it can be a primary disorder. Its effects can vary according to its causes. They might include sleepiness, muscular fatigue, hallucinations, and/or mental fatigue; but people with chronic insomnia often show increased alertness. Some people that live with this disorder see things as though they were happening in slow motion, whereas moving objects seem to blend together. Can cause double vision.^[6]

The pattern of insomnia often is related to the etiology.^[8]

Onset insomnia - difficulty falling asleep at the beginning of the night, often associated with anxiety disorders.
Middle-of-the-Night Insomnia - Insomnia characterized by difficulty returning to sleep after awakening in the middle of the night or waking too early in the morning. Also referred to as nocturnal awakenings. Encompasses middle and terminal insomnia.
Middle insomnia - waking during the middle of the night, difficulty maintaining sleep. Often associated with pain disorders or medical illness.
Terminal (or late) insomnia - early morning waking. Characteristic of clinical depression.

Insomnia can be caused by:

Psychoactive drugs or stimulants, including certain medications, herbs, caffeine, cocaine, ephedrine, amphetamines, methylphenidate, MDMA, methamphetamine and modafinil
Hormone shifts such as those that precede menstruation and those during menopause
Life problems like fear, stress, anxiety, emotional or mental tension, work problems, financial stress, unsatisfactory sex life
Mental disorders such as bipolar disorder, clinical depression, general anxiety disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, or obsessive compulsive disorder.
Disturbances of the circadian rhythm, such as shift work and jet lag, can cause an inability to sleep at some times of the day and excessive sleepiness at other times of the day. Jet lag is seen in people who travel through multiple time zones, as the time relative to the rising and setting of the sun no longer coincides with the body's internal concept of it. The insomnia experienced by shift workers is also a circadian rhythm sleep disorder.
Estrogen is considered to play a significant role in women’s mental health (including insomnia). A conceptual model of how estrogen affects mood was suggested by Douma et al 2005 based on their extensive literature review relating activity of endogenous, bio-identical and synthetic estrogen with mood and well-being. They concluded the sudden estrogen withdrawal, fluctuating estrogen, and periods of sustained estrogen low levels correlated with significant mood lowering. Clinical recovery from depression postpartum, perimenopause, and postmenopause was shown to be effective after levels of estrogen were stabilized and/or restored.^[9]^[10]
Certain neurological disorders, brain lesions, or a history of traumatic brain injury
Medical conditions such as hyperthyroidism and Wilson's syndrome
Abuse of over-the counter or prescription sleep aids can produce rebound insomnia
Poor sleep hygiene, e.g., noise
Parasomnia, which includes a number of disruptive sleep events including nightmares, sleepwalking, violent behavior while sleeping, and REM behavior disorder, in which a person moves his/her physical body in response to events within his/her dreams
A rare genetic condition can cause a prion-based, permanent and eventually fatal form of insomnia called fatal familial insomnia
Parasites can cause intestinal disturbances while sleeping.

A common misperception is that the amount of sleep a person requires decreases as he or she ages. The ability to sleep for long periods, rather than the need for sleep, appears to be lost as people get older. Some elderly insomniacs toss and turn in bed and occasionally fall off the bed at night, diminishing the amount of sleep they receive.^[11]

An overactive mind or physical pain may also be causes. Finding the underlying cause of insomnia is usually necessary to cure it. Insomnia can be common after the loss of a loved one, even years or decades after the death, if they have not gone through the grieving process. Overall, symptoms and the degree of their severity affect each individual differently depending on their mental health, physical condition, and attitude or personality.

Nabi Ismail sebagai Qurban

Nabi Ibrahim dari masa ke semasa pergi ke Makkah untuk mengunjungi dan menjenguk Ismail di tempat pengasingannya bagi menghilangkan rasa rindu hatinya kepada puteranya yang ia sayangi serta menenangkan hatinya yang selalu rungsing bila mengenangkan keadaan puteranya bersama ibunya yang ditinggalkan di tempat yang tandus, jauh dari masyarakat kota dan pengaulan umum.

Sewaktu Nabi Ismail mencapai usia remajanya Nabi Ibrahim a.s. mendapat mimpi bahwa ia harus menyembelih Ismail puteranya. Dan mimpi seorang nabi adalah salah satu dari cara-cara turunnya wahyu Allah, maka perintah yang diterimanya dalam mimpi itu harus dilaksanakan oleh Nabi Ibrahim. Ia duduk sejurus termenung memikirkan ujian yang maha berat yang ia hadapi. Sebagai seorang ayah yang dikurniai seorang putera yang sejak puluhan tahun diharap-harapkan dan didambakan, seorang putera yang telah mencapai usia di mana jasa-jasanya sudah dapat dimanfaatkan oleh si ayah, seorang putera yang diharapkan menjadi pewarisnya dan penyampung kelangsungan keturunannya, tiba-tiba harus dijadikan qurban dan harus direnggut nyawa oleh tangan si ayah sendiri.

Namun ia sebagai seorang Nabi, pesuruh Allah dan pembawa agama yang seharusnya menjadi contoh dan teladan bagi para pengikutnya dalam bertaat kepada Allah, menjalankan segala perintah-Nya dan menempatkan cintanya kepada Allah di atas cintanya kepada anak, isteri, harta benda dan lain-lain. Ia harus melaksanakan perintah Allah yang diwahyukan melalui mimpinya, apa pun yang akan terjadi sebagai akibat pelaksanaan perintah itu.

Sungguh amat berat ujian yang dihadapi oleh Nabi Ibrahim, namun sesuai dengan firman Allah yang bermaksud: "Allah lebih mengetahui di mana dan kepada siapa Dia mengamanatkan risalahnya". Nabi Ibrahim tidak membuang masa lagi, berazam (niat) tetap akan menyembelih Nabi Ismail puteranya sebagai qurban sesuai dengan perintah Allah yang telah diterimanya. Dan berangkatlah serta merta Nabi Ibrahim menuju ke Makkah untuk menemui dan menyampaikan kepada puteranya apa yang Allah perintahkan.

Nabi Ismail sebagai anak yang soleh yang sangat taat kepada Allah dan bakti kepada orang tuanya, ketika diberitahu oleh ayahnya maksud kedatangannya kali ini tanpa ragu-ragu dan berfikir panjang berkata kepada ayahnya:

"Wahai ayahku! Laksanakanlah apa yang telah diperintahkan oleh Allah kepadamu. Engkau akan menemuiku insya-Allah sebagai seorang yang sabar dan patuh kepada perintah. Aku hanya meminta dalam melaksanakan perintah Allah itu, agar ayah mengikatku kuat-kuat supaya aku tidak banyak bergerak sehingga menyusahkan ayah, kedua agar menanggalkan pakaianku supaya tidak terkena darah yang akan menyebabkan berkurangnya pahalaku dan terharunya ibuku bila melihatnya, ketiga tajamkanlah parangmu dan percepatkanlah perlaksanaan penyembelihan agar menringankan penderitaan dan rasa pedihku, keempat dan yang terakhir sampaikanlah salamku kepada ibuku berikanlah kepadanya pakaian ku ini untuk menjadi penghiburnya dalam kesedihan dan tanda mata serta kenang-kenangan baginya dari putera tunggalnya."

Kemudian dipeluknyalah Ismail dan dicium pipinya oleh Nabi Ibrahim seraya berkata: "Bahagialah aku mempunyai seorang putera yang taat kepada Allah, bakti kepada orang tua yang dengan ikhlas hati menyerahkan dirinya untuk melaksanakan perintah Allah".

Saat penyembelihan yang mengerikan telah tiba. Diikatlah kedua tangan dan kaki Ismail, dibaringkanlah ia di atas lantai, lalu diambillah parang tajam yang sudah tersedia dan sambil memegang parang di tangannya, kedua mata nabi Ibrahim yang tergenang air berpindah memandang dari wajah puteranya ke parang yang mengilap di tangannya, seakan-akan pada masa itu hati beliau menjadi tempat pertarungan antara perasaan seorang ayah di satu pihak dan kewajiban seorang rasul di satu pihak yang lain. Pada akhirnya dengan memejamkan matanya, parang diletakkan pada leher Nabi Ismail dan penyembelihan di lakukan . Akan tetapi apa daya, parang yang sudah demikian tajamnya itu ternyata menjadi tumpul dileher Nabi Ismail dan tidak dapat berfungsi sebagaimana mestinya dan sebagaimana diharapkan.

Kejadian tersebut merupakan suatu mukjizat dari Allah yang menegaskan bahwa perintah perkorbanan Ismail itu hanya suatu ujian bagi Nabi Ibrahim dan Nabi Ismail sampai sejauh mana cinta dan taat mereka kepada Allah. Ternyata keduanya telah lulus dalam ujian yang sangat berat itu. Nabi Ibrahim telah menunjukkan kesetiaan yang tulus dengan perkorbanan puteranya. untuk berbakti melaksanakan perintah Allah sedangkan Nabi Ismail tidak sedikit pun ragu atau bimbang dalam memperagakan kebaktiannya kepada Allah dan kepada orang tuanya dengan menyerahkan jiwa raganya untuk dikorbankan, sampai-sampai terjadi seketika merasa bahwa parang itu tidak lut memotong lehernya, berkatalah ia kepada ayahnya:" Wahai ayahku! Rupa-rupanya engkau tidak sampai hati memotong leherku karena melihat wajahku, cubalah telangkupkan aku dan laksanakanlah tugasmu tanpa melihat wajahku. "Akan tetapi parang itu tetap tidak berdaya mengeluarkan setitik darah pun dari daging Ismail walau ia telah ditelangkupkan dan dicuba memotong lehernya dari belakang.

Dalam keadaan bingung dan sedih hati, kerana gagal dalam usahanya menyembelih puteranya, datanglah kepada Nabi Ibrahim wahyu Allah dengan firmannya: "Wahai Ibrahim! Engkau telah berhasil melaksanakan mimpimu, demikianlah kami akan membalas orang-orang yang berbuat kebajikkan". Kemudian sebagai tebusan ganti nyawa, Ismail telah diselamatkan itu, Allah memerintahkan Nabi Ibrahim menyembelih seekor kambing yang telah tersedia di sampingnya dan segera dipotong leher kambing itu oleh beliau dengan parang yang tumpul di leher puteranya Ismail itu. Dan inilah asal permulaan sunnah berqurban yang dilakukan oleh umat Islam pada tiap Hari Raya Aidiladha di seluruh pelosok dunia.

Vaginal Yeast Infection

What Is It?

Vaginal yeast infections, also called "Candida vaginal infections," typically are caused by the Candida albicans fungus. During a lifetime, 75 percent of all women are likely to have at least one vaginal Candida infection, and up to 45 percent have two or more. Women tend to be more likely to get to vaginal yeast infections if their bodies are under stress from poor diet, lack of sleep, illness, or when they are pregnant or taking antibiotics. Women with immune-suppressing diseases such as diabetes and HIV infection also are at increased risk.

Symptoms

The symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection include:

Vaginal itch or soreness
Thick, white, cheeselike discharge
"Burning" discomfort around the vaginal opening, especially if urine touches the area
Pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse.

Diagnosis

Your doctor will suspect an infection based on your symptoms. Your doctor will do a pelvic examination to look for inflammation and a white discharge in your vagina and around the vaginal opening. Your doctor may also take a sample of the vaginal discharge for quick examination under a microscope in the office or to send to a laboratory to test for yeast organisms, such as Candida fungi.

Expected Duration

Proper treatment cures up to 90 percent of vaginal yeast infections within two weeks or less, often within a few days. A small number of people will have repeat infections. Usually, these will improve with repeated treatment. However, patients with unexplained, repeat episodes should be tested for diabetes or HIV � two conditions that can suppress the immune system and increase the risk of infections.

Prevention

To help prevent vaginal yeast infections, you can try the following suggestions:

Keep the external genital area clean and dry.
Avoid irritating soaps (including bubble bath), vaginal sprays and douches.
Change tampons and sanitary napkins frequently.
Wear loose cotton (rather than nylon) underwear that doesn't trap moisture.
After swimming, change quickly into your dry clothing instead of sitting in your wet bathing suit for prolonged periods.
Take antibiotics only when prescribed by your doctor, and never take them for longer than your doctor directs.
If you are diabetic, try to keep tight control over your blood sugar levels.

Treatment

Vaginal yeast infections can be treated with antifungal medicines that are inserted directly into the vagina as tablets, creams, ointments or suppositories. These medications include butoconazole (Femstat), clotrimazole (Clotrimaderm, Canesten), miconazole (Monistat, Monazole, Micozole), nystatin (several brand names), tioconazole (GyneCure) and terconazole (Terazole). A single dose of oral fluconazole (Diflucan Oral) also may be used, although this treatment is not recommended during pregnancy. Treatment of sex partners is not usually necessary, since most vaginal yeast infections are not transmitted sexually. However, if a male sex partner shows symptoms of Candida balanitis (redness, irritation and/or itching at the tip of the penis), he may need to be treated with an antifungal cream or ointment.

Although many medications used to treat vaginal yeast infections are now available without a prescription, you should use these medications only for treating repeat infections, not for your first episode. Any woman who experiences symptoms of a vaginal infection for the first time should visit a doctor. This is important to be sure that the vaginal discharge and discomfort is caused by yeast and not sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea, chlamydia or trichomoniasis.

About 5 percent of women with vaginal yeast infections develop recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC), which is defined as four or more vaginal yeast infections in a one-year period. Although RVVC is more common in women who have diabetes or weakened immune systems, most women with RVVC have no underlying medical illness that would predispose them to recurrent Candida infections. Medical experts still are trying to determine the most effective way to treat RVVC. Currently, most doctors treat this problem with two weeks of oral medication, followed by up to six months of a lower maintenance dose.

Yes... as title.. My hubby will be on sign to Vessel SS Bubuk Tomorrow 3rd November 2008 at GATE sharp 7.45am. So today, he and his best mates did some hilarious action. Taken some photos of them at the beach. And we did some BBQ today... HAPPY Viewing .
